The Chapel of the Cross will hold a Service of Remembrance and Morning Prayer to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War (1918-2018). We will honor the fallen from all wars, and pay tribute to veterans and active duty military and their families.
The service will feature:
+ Lessons and hymns from the November 17, 1918 service at Westminster Abbey in London, England (the first service at the Abbey after the signing of the Armistice Treaty on November 11)
+ At 11:00am, our bell will peal 21 times, and a moment of silence will be observed (part of the Bells of Peace initiative by the national World War One Centennial Commission: https://www.worldwar1centennial.org/)
+ Invitation to vets and active duty service men & women to stand as we applaud them in recognition and thanks for their service*
+ Live music (organ, choir, bugler)
+ Recitation of "In Flanders Fields" (by John McCrae) and "For the Fallen" (by Lawrence Binyon)
+ Distribution of poppy pins
+ Collection for local veterans charities
Visitors are invited to stay for refreshments after the service and to browse historical and personal memorabilia from veterans and their families.
* Service men & women are invited to dress in uniform and/or wear their service medals, as we honor them and give thanks for their service.
